I’m Avela Jotile, a 26-year-old from the Western Cape, South Africa. I’ve always had a passion for electricity, and six months ago, I took a big step toward turning that passion into a career. Joining Solid Light Solar has been a life changing experience that has shaped both my personal growth and my professional journey.
How It All Began
When I joined Solid Light Solar, I had no idea how much I would learn and grow in just six months. From day one, I was hands-on, working on solar installations for homes and small businesses. I’ve installed numerous solar panels on all kinds of roofs—slate, metal, concrete, tile, you name it. I’ve also wired distribution boards, mounted inverters and batteries, and tested systems to make sure everything runs perfectly.
Every project brought new challenges, but that’s where the magic happened. I learned the importance of precise attention to detail, safety, and teamwork. I also discovered how rewarding it is to see a project come together and know I played a part in making it happen.
Rediscovering My Passion
Before joining Solid Light Solar, I had an electrical engineering background. I completed my N1-N5 qualifications at Northlink College and some training with Green Solar Academy. But if I’m honest, I wasn’t sure about my career path back then.
This internship changed everything. Working in solar made me realize just how much I love solving problems and working with my hands. Seeing how renewable energy impacts people’s lives and contributes to a greener future reawakened my passion for the field.
Looking Ahead
My ultimate dream is to become a fully qualified electrician. While I’ve gained a strong foundation in solar energy, I want to expand my skills to include commercial and industrial electrical work. Right now, I’m looking for an electrical engineering apprenticeship to take that next step.
I see myself continuing to make a difference in renewable energy, but I also want to grow as a professional and take on more complex projects. Solid Light Solar has been the perfect place to start my career, giving me the tools and support I needed to succeed. I’m grateful for the experiences I’ve had so far, and I’m excited about what’s next.
Advice for aspiring electricians
If you’re thinking about a career in renewable energy or electrical work, my advice is simple: Be curious, be patient, and never stop learning. The industry is challenging but so rewarding, and there’s always something new to discover.
